Keeping your carpet spotless can be daunting, especially if you’ve been dealing with all manner of stains over the years. There are plenty of contaminants that may leave stains on your carpet, but thankfully, the most common ones have fairly easy solutions:
No matter how well trained your pets may be, sometimes accidents happen. Maybe their stomach was upset; they couldn’t hold it in while you were trying to take them out for a walk. When that happens, you will have to act as fast as possible to prevent stains from forming. You should use tissues or paper towels to blot out or pick up as much of the mess as possible. Make sure you scoop or blot out, but never scrub.
Scrubbing will only end up spreading the mess or pushing it deeper into the carpet’s fibres, so it should be avoided at all costs. You should spray the area with a solution of dishwashing liquid and water instead. Let it sit on the carpet for a minute before you blot it dry. You should make a second solution using water and vinegar and spray it on the carpet, then let it sit for a while before you dab or dry it.
You may have accidentally dropped your coffee on the carpet or spilt it on its surface. You should put it down and focus on removing the stain as soon as possible before it sets in. If you let it sit like that, the result will be a permanent yellow-brown stain on the carpet, so soak up as much of it as you can with paper towels, and once again avoid scrubbing. Grab your water and vinegar solution and spray the stain with it. You can also use a non-bleach detergent if you must; just let it stay for a bit, blot it up and sprinkle some baking soda on the area before allowing it to dry out. Vacuum up the baking soda when you’re done.
You may have accidentally cut yourself and dripped blood on the carpet, or maybe your child scraped their knees, ending on its surface. You should make sure you get to work on the stain as soon as you’re done patching up the wound. The first thing you have to do is spray it with cold water. Warm or hot water will only make the stain set in, so you should avoid that. Create a solution of cold water and dish detergent and use it to coat further and dab the stained area. Repeat the process until you can’t see blood anymore.
You might have accidentally leaked ink on your floors if you used a pen to sign a document or for any other reason. Ink stains may be tough, but they’re not impossible to resolve. Pour some rubbing alcohol on the spot, but if you don’t have any, you can also use nail polish remover or hair spray as a backup. Let it sit on the stain for about an hour, then dab it up until you can’t see the ink stain anymore.
Dropping red wine on the carpet may look horrible and a nightmare to clean, but you can still save your carpet if you act quickly. Make sure you keep some tonic water around for that reason. Pour it onto the stain and cover it entirely with the liquid. The bubbles will break up the stain before it sets in. Once that happens, gently dab the tonic water away, and let the carpet dry. Follow that up by spraying it with water and vinegar. Blot the water and vinegar mixture until the area is completely dry, then sprinkle baking soda on the spot and vacuum it away after an hour.
